Eleven days have passed since the January transfer window opened, with Premier League sides unusually quiet so far. With three weeks left to bring in recruits, we look at the players linked with England’s top clubs, and what each team needs for the second half of the season.
Leicester
The departure of Vicente Iborra has opened up space for a midfielder, although his sale was sanctioned because the Foxes already have plenty of players in that position. The club has moved for Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny in the past and the Egyptian could be more open to the switch now, having fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates.
Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp has spent close to £250m on five players in the last two windows. An injury crisis is unlikely to result in him entering the market this time, with Joe Gomez set to return in the coming weeks.
Manchester City
With so many options across the pitch, it is unlikely that Pep Guardiola will be reaching for the club’s wallet this month.
Manchester United
United are yet to find the centre backs to replace Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, with a series of misfires in recent windows. Toby Alderweireld would be one of the cheaper options at £25m, while it is reported that the club have long been admirers of Senegal’s Kalidou Koulibaly.
Newcastle
The Magpies actually made a profit in the summer window, and it is unlikely that a single penny of those funds will be spent this month. They are in talks with Atlanta United over midfielder Miguel Almiron, although the clubs are reportedly some distance apart in their valuation of the Paraguayan.
Southampton
Steven Davis has already left the club in this window and more are likely to follow, with Manolo Gabbiadini linked with an exit. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s preference to play with three centre backs could see him move for another pacey full back or winger.
Tottenham
Tottenham famously made no signings in the summer and, with their new stadium still under construction, that is unlikely to change this time around.
Watford
The main decision for Javi Gracia will be whether to keep Abdoulaye Doucoure at the club, with PSG apparently set to test Watford’s resolve with a big bid. Should the French midfielder leave, a replacement would need to be brought in quickly.
West Ham
Star striker Marko Arnautovic has attracted interest from an undisclosed Chinese outfit. The club’s priority will be to keep the Austrian, although summer signing Lucas Perez could be allowed to leave. Should either depart, a new forward will be probably be required.
Wolves
Having seen a bid for Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham rejected, Wolves could broaden their search for a striker to compete with Raul Jiminez. However, it would be no surprise if there are no arrivals at Molineux this month.
