Ten days have passed since the January transfer window opened, with Premier League sides unusually quiet so far. With three weeks left to bring in recruits, we look at the players linked with England’s top clubs, and what each team needs for the second half of the season.
Arsenal
Unai Emery is reportedly in the market for another option in midfield and attack, with Denis Suarez and Yannick Carrasco heavily linked with a move to London. However, any arrivals will only be loan deals until more funds are available. Despite having failed to solve the Gunners’ defensive woes, Emery is likely to put faith in the raft of players returning from injury until the summer.
Bournemouth
Dominic Solanke and Nathanial Clyne have already arrived on the south coast from Liverpool, with the latter set to feature regularly. However, injuries to Dan Gosling and Lewis Cook have left the Cherries light in the middle of the park, so a new centre midfielder could be a possibility.
Brighton
Manager Chris Hughton is unlikely to bring in anybody during the January window, having spent close to £65m in the summer.
Burnley
Former Claret Jay Rodriguez continues to be linked with a return to Turf Moor, but Sean Dyche already has four centre forwards at his disposal. The team have at least two options for every position apart from on the wing, although 19-year-old Dwight McNeill has recently stepped up to the first team.
Cardiff
Any business done by the Bluebirds in the window is likely to just be a loan deal, with Neil Warnock lacking options in attack. Everton’s Oumar Niasse has been linked with a move, while Emiliano Sala could join from Nantes.
Chelsea
Diego Costa has still not been adequately replaced, with neither Alvaro Morata nor Olivier Giroud consistent enough at centre forward. One option could be a swap deal involving the former and Gonzalo Higuain, with whom Maurizio Sarri worked at Napoli. Callum Wilson’s early season form at Bournemouth has also turned heads.
Crystal Palace
Palace continue to operate with only one recognised striker in Jordan Ayew, while Wilfried Zaha and Andros Townsend have been relied upon for goals. Jermain Defoe and Tammy Abraham have both rejected a move to Selhurst Park, while the club are linked with Ipswich midfielder Andre Dozzell.
Everton
Having brought in six players over the summer, Marco Silva is unlikely to make any signings in the winter window.
Fulham
It is clear that Fulham need to improve if they are to avoid relegation, but Claudio Ranieri is unlikely to have sufficient funds for signings considering that the club spent close to £100m in the summer. Instead, the Italian will probably have to simply bring the best out of the players currently at his disposal.
Huddersfield
It seems that there aren’t enough strikers to go around. Huddersfield have only scored 13 goals in the league this season, of which their forwards have contributed just one. Midfielder Jason Puncheon has joined on loan but he is unlikely to add goals to the side.
