Things to look out for in Europe tonight

There is plenty of football action to look forward to tonight, with teams in La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 all in action. Here are five things to look out for.

Wounded Barça to punish Leganés

Barcelona’s perfect start to the season was brought to a halt when they drew 2-2 at home to Girona over the weekend. The match also involved a controversial sending off for defender Clement Lenglet. That result allowed Real Madrid to catch up with them at the top of the table.

The Catalans take on bottom-of-the-table Leganés tonight. Leganés have lost five and drawn one of their six games so far this season. They could be in for a hiding from the champions.

Ronaldo to keep soaring

Cristiano Ronaldo appears to have found his groove in the colours of Juventus. The former Madrid and Manchester United man went three games without scoring, which ordinarily counts as a drought for his lofty standard. He has, however, scored three goals in his last two Serie A matches.

Next up for the Old Lady is a home clash with 18th-placed Bologna. It looks like another ripe opportunity for Ronaldo to continue on his upward trajectory.

Time for Asensio?

Marco Asensio was one of the reasons why Real did not feel a desperate need to sign a replacement for Ronaldo when the Portuguese left in the summer. So far, the Spanish youngster has proven his importance to the team with three assists in five games, as well as the winning goal in Real’s 1-0 win over Espanyol last weekend.

With Isco ruled out from action for the foreseeable future, Asensio now has a free run at establishing himself as a first team fixture. That starts with tonight’s game against Sevilla.

Top six reshuffle in Ligue 1

The gap between Paris St. Germain and the rest of the teams in Ligue 1 looks like it has now become a formality. Last season, they won the league by a margin of 13 points over Monaco, who came in second. With just six games gone this season, they are already five points ahead of Lille in second place.

The race for the best of the rest is quite a tight affair, however. Only three points separate Lille and Nice in 10th. Five of those nine teams are in action tonight, which means that we will likely some significant movement in the top half of the table.

Leverkusen to continue their revival

Bayer Leverkusen had a nightmare start to the season, as they lost their first three matches in the Bundesliga. They then fell 2-0 down to Ludogorets in the Europa League last week, before a brilliant comeback saw them secure a 3-2 win. They followed that with a 1-0 victory over Mainz last weekend and will want to build on that momentum tonight. They play Fortuna Düsseldorf at the ESPRIT Arena.
