Burnley v Man City (Friday August 11, 20:00 GMT)

Friday’s Premier League 2023-24 curtain-raiser is certainly not lacking in narrative: not only has it paired last season’s Championship and Premier League winners together, but Vincent Kompany will preside over Burnley against his former club Man City.

Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville famously asked “Where do you want your statue, Vincent Kompany?” moments after the Belgium defender’s outrageous 30-yard strike against Leicester had moved them one step closer to retaining the title four years ago, and they duly built one for him outside the Etihad Stadium.

All sentiment must go out of the window on Friday evening, though, with every point crucial for both teams. The two sides met in the FA Cup last season, with Man City running out emphatic 6-0 winners, suggesting the hosts could be in store for a tough evening at Turf Moor.

Indeed, the Citizens have won 10 of the last 11 meetings between these sides without conceding a goal dating back to October 2018, suggesting there is value in backing only away team to score at odds of 2.04. In other words, this means Man City winning alongside keeping a clean sheet.

Newcastle v Aston Villa (Saturday August 12, 17:30 GMT)

Saturday’s evening kick-off pits together two of last season’s main overachievers, who both qualified for European football for the first time in several years, and they will have major ambitions of doing so once again after making some eye-catching signings during the summer transfer window.

Last season’s meetings saw the home team run out comfortable winners on both occasions, but this could be a closer affair if their draw in a recent pre-season friendly is anything to go by.

Ultimately, it’s a difficult match to predict between two fiercely competitive teams, with Newcastle boasting the joint-best defensive record in the division last season and Villa massively improving in every measure following Unai Emery’s appointment last November. We’ll back Under 2.5 Goals at odds of 2.14, with both managers likely to look to keep things tight early on in the campaign.

Chelsea v Liverpool (Sunday August 13, 16:30 GMT)

Last but by no means least, Chelsea take on Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday late afternoon, with Mauricio Pochettino set to make his managerial debut in West London.

Despite successfully leading the Blues’ rivals Tottenham for several seasons, the former Argentina defender should have few issues winning Chelsea’s crowd round after they endured their worst league campaign for over 25 years last time out.

Liverpool suffered a disappointing season themselves, missing out on qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2016, but they are set to sign Moises Caicedo for a British record transfer fee to help plug a lack of defensive midfield quality after losing Fabinho and Jordan Henderson.

Incredibly, the last four meetings between these sides have finished 0-0, with each of the last six ending as draws full stop. We would not be surprised if the latter repeats itself on Sunday, but we do expect some goals this time around.

While arguably no team in the division can match Liverpool’s attacking firepower, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s movements from full-back into midfield regularly leave them vulnerable in transition, with Pochettino’s side possessing plenty of pace and quality in wide areas to punish the Reds.
