Premier League Team of the Week: February 26-27

It’s no surprise to see three Liverpool players in our Team of the Week.

Angus Gunn (Southampton)

Southampton’s winless run is over! Gunn made four saves as the Saints kept a clean sheet against Fulham and climbed out of the relegation zone. This was the first time that his side had won at home without conceding this season!

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Alexander-Arnold became the youngest player to record a hat-trick of assists in the Premier League in Liverpool’s win over Watford. Two early crosses were converted by Sadio Mane to put the league leaders in control, before his free kick was headed in by Virgil Van Dijk in the second half. Considering he hadn’t started any of Liverpool’s last five league games, the full-back certainly came back with style!

Fabian Schar (Newcastle)

Newcastle’s players have had 120 shots from outside the box so far this season – who thought that Schar would be the first to find the net? The Swiss’ thunderbolt against Burnley paved the way for Newcastle to record their eighth win of the season, leaving them six points clear of the relegation zone.

Virgil Van Dijk (Liverpool)

Two goals from the dominant defender capped a brilliant performance against Watford. This was Liverpool’s 16th clean sheet of the season and their third in a row in the league – they managed 17 in the whole of last season.

Luke Shaw (Manchester United)

What an assist! Shaw beat four Crystal Palace players before teeing up Romelu Lukaku to score the opening goal at Selhurst Park. He should have claimed another assist earlier on, only for the Belgian to blaze his cross over the bar. This was his 22nd league appearance of the season, as many as the last two campaigns combined.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Arsenal)

Mkhitaryan scored and assisted in a second straight game as Arsenal beat Bournemouth 5-1 on Wednesday. He doubled the Gunners’ lead after linking well with Mesut Ozil, before two setting up two goals shortly after the break. Arsenal fans will hope that this is the start of a productive run for the Armenian.

Jorginho (Chelsea)

Who says that Jorginho doesn’t defend? The summer signing has been much maligned of late, but he made six tackles and four interceptions in Chelsea’ win over Tottenham (both match highs). It was actually a very atypical performance from the Italy international, with only 69 touches and 44 successful passes.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (Everton)

A goal in each half from Everton’s number 10 pushed his side into the top half of the table. He has now scored 11 times this league campaign, equalling his highest tally which he achieved in 2015/16.

Pedro (Chelsea)

A wonderful solo goal from the Spaniard put Chelsea ahead against Tottenham. He then preserved the lead with a last-ditch tackle to stop Christian Eriksen from shooting. The result leaves the Blues only seven points behind their rivals – can they catch them.

Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United)

With the pre-match build-up surrounding Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford’s absence, Romelu Lukaku gave a timely reminder of his abilities with two well taken goals against Crystal Palace. He has now moved into the top 20 of all-time Premier League scorers at just 25 years of age.

Sadio Mane (Liverpool)

After drawing a blank last weekend at Old Trafford, Mane returned to the scoresheet with a brace against Watford. First he headed past Ben Foster after just eight minutes, before beating the Hornets’ keeper with a powerful back-heel. He now has six goals in six league games.
