Premier League Team of the Week: August 31 – September 1

Arsenal and Tottenham each have one player in our Team of the Week. Bet on the Premier League here.

Hugo Lloris (Tottenham)

Six saves from the Spurs skipper ensured that his side left the Emirates with a point on Sunday. In a gripping game that featured plenty of chances, goalkeepers were always going to play a big part in the result and, while counterpart Bernd Leno had a game to forget, Lloris was on song.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Having gone three league games without a clean sheet, Liverpool restored their defensive stability at Burnley with a routine win. Alexander-Arnold was effective at both ends of the pitch, opening the scoring with a deflected cross and winning three tackles (no Liverpool player made more).

Jannik Vestergaard (Southampton)

At 1.99m in height, Vestergaard will expect to win most headers. He did just that against Manchester United, levelling the scored shortly before the hour mark. He also completed 92% of his attempted passes, a match high. United’s winless run on the road continues.

Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

It came as little surprise to see Van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s strong defensive showing. Tasked with monitoring the troublesome Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes, the recently crowned UEFA Men’s Player of the Year won ten aerial duels. The Reds stay top.

Arthur Masuaku (West Ham)

West Ham have recovered brilliantly from their defeat to Manchester City on the opening weekend. They have taken seven points from three games since, the latest of which came against Norwich on Saturday. Masuaku set up the opening goal and kept a clean sheet – the first the Irons have had this season.

Richarlison (Everton)

Everton extended their winning run at Goodison Park to six victories in an entertaining game against Wolves. Richarlison both opened and rounded off the scoring, using his full box of tricks with a composed finish and a towering header. Wolves remain winless.

Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

The Belgian midfielder appears in our Team of the Week for the second time this season after a goal and an assist against Brighton. His second-minute strike was the fastest in the division so far this season, and made the Seagulls’ already almighty task that much harder.

Matteo Guendouzi (Arsenal)

Guendouzi played a big part in both goals as Arsenal fought back to draw with Tottenham. He recovered possession high up the pitch for the Gunners’ first before feeding Aubameyang for a late equaliser. He has started all four of Arsenal’s league games this season and looks set to be an important player for them.

Callum Robinson (Sheffield United)

The Blades looked anything but sharp in the first half against Chelsea. However, a goal and an assist from Robinson at either end of the second period earned his side a point. United remain unbeaten away from home this season.

Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

Aguero scored a brace for the second weekend in a row to move top of the Premier League scoring charts. He has now scored in all four of City’s league games this season and could be a smart bet as Golden Boot winner at odds of 4.40.

Jamie Vardy (Leicester)

It’s been three years since Vardy fired Leicester to the title and, although most of his fellow champions have since departed, he remains as effective as ever. He broke the deadlock against Bournemouth with a brilliant lob, before an instinctive finish sealed the points. He also provided the assist for the Foxes’ second goal. No player has scored more Premier League goals since Brendan Rodgers was appointed at the club.
