Champions League (18-19th April): Bayern facing monumental task against Man City

The Champions League quarter-finals draw to a conclusion this week, with Bayern Munich aiming to pull off one of the competition’s greatest comebacks by overturning a 3-0 deficit against Manchester City on Wednesday evening.

Pep Guardiola’s side blew the Bavarians away at the Etihad Stadium last week, with goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland taking them one step closer to setting up a repeat of last season’s semi-final against Real Madrid.

Indeed, the holders dispatched Chelsea 2-0 at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, while Napoli and Benfica will also be chasing from the outset after both falling to defeat against the two Milanese sides.

Bayern Munich vs Manchester City (Wednesday 20:00 GMT+1)

Although Bayern’s task is undoubtedly a difficult one, it is not necessarily mission impossible, with Liverpool laying the template through their 4-0 victory against Barcelona four seasons ago having lost the first leg 3-0 at Camp Nou.

Barca themselves became the first and only team to overturn a four-goal deficit by thumping Paris Saint-Germain 6-1 in the reverse leg in 2017, while all the way back in 2004, Deportivo La Coruna stunned AC Milan 4-0 after losing the first leg 4-1 at San Siro.

However, Guardiola’s Man City are not a team to be chasing against, with their peerless retention of possession in tight areas now backed up by their ability to unleash the irrepressible Erling Haaland in behind should their opponents attempt to push up against them.

We correctly tipped the Citizens to win and the Norway forward to score anytime in last week’s leg, and it would be little surprise to see the 22-year-old score for the seventh time in nine career appearances against the Bundesliga champions.

With 47 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions since joining Man City last summer, it will not be long at all until he hits the magic 50 mark. You can back Haaland to score anytime and move one step closer to that landmark on Wednesday at odds of 1.77.

After blanking last week, many will fancy Bayern to score this time at Allianz Arena, where they have not failed to find to back of the net in a competitive match since drawing 0-0 against RB Leipzig in February 2020. We’ve had a global pandemic since then!

While I firmly expect Man City to progress to the semi-finals for the third successive season, it would not be a surprise if Thomas Tuchel’s side make them sweat a little. You can back Bayern to win & Both Teams To Score at chunky odds of 4.00.
