Benzema hits out at Giroud: social media highlights for March 28-29

Benzema Giroud France

Football’s biggest stars are staying indoors now due to the ongoing pandemic. Many are choosing to conduct live videos as a way to connect with fans and other players. Here we’ve picked out some of the highlights from the weekend, including a confrontational quote from Karim Benzema and some Ghanaian tricks. You can look back at the best tweets from last weekend here.

Benzema lets fans know his thoughts on Giroud

Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema recorded a live video in which he answered questions from fans, friends and other players. One quote in particular stood out. When asked about Olivier Giroud’s role as France’s main striker instead of himself, Benzema made clear his opinion.

“You do not confuse F1 racing with karting. I am being nice here.”

Benzema had, of course, been dropped from the France squad in 2016 following a personal scandal. As a result, Giroud led the line at the European Championships in 2016 before he lifted the World Cup two years later, albeit without scoring. It seems the Real Madrid striker believes he should be replaced.

The Ayew brothers keep up their skills

The lockdown in several countries means families can spend more time with each other. It’s no different for the Ayew brothers of Ghana.

Jordan, Andre and Ibrahim were the latest players to post a video displaying their football skills indoors. All three brothers proved their ability before the move ended with an acrobatic finish from Andre. Let’s see whether he can score like that for the Black Stars!

Aubameyang stays quiet about signing a new deal…

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sat down with Besiktas midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng for a live video interview. With both players stuck in their homes due to the Coronavirus, the friendly conversation was a chance for them to entertain their fans.

The laughs stopped briefly, however, when the former Ghana international asked Aubameyang about a new deal at Arsenal. The Gunners captain has just one year left on his deal and has been linked with a move away this summer. He didn’t reply to Boateng, who then jokingly suggested that he and the Gabonese striker should swap clubs. That did bring a smile from Aubameyang, but it’s not great news for Gunners fans.

… while Kane suggests he might leave north London too

In a similar interview with former Tottenham player Jamie Redknapp, Harry Kane also discussed his future. Like Aubameyang, his response did little to reassure the fan base.

“If I don’t feel we’re progressing as a team or moving in the right direction then I’m not someone to just stay there for the sake of it.”

Considering the regression that Tottenham have made this season, this could come as worrying news to Spurs fans. The club have spent heavily on Stephen Bergwijn, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele as they seek to refresh their attack. They must now hope that, under Jose Mourinho’s guidance, they can give Kane the support he craves.
