Premier League Golden Boot race: Outright odds assessed

We are now a third of the way through the 2018/19 Premier League season, and the table is beginning to take shape.

Alongside that, the attackers in the league are finding their rhythm, with the race for the Golden Boot hotting up, even at this early stage of the campaign.

We take a look at the current top five scorers in the Premier League and assess their chances of being the top marksman come May, 2019, alongside some outsiders who could make you money on the outright market.

Sergio Aguero
Goals scored: 8
Odds: 3.45

Having started every Premier League game for the best team in the league, it is no surprise to see Argentine striker Sergio Aguero on top of the goal scorers list after 13 matches. Opposition goalkeepers have picked the ball out of their net eight times due to Aguero, and he has scored over 20 league goals in five of his seven full seasons in England. Injuries and suspensions have restricted his chances of being the top scorer in the past, so if he can curtail these, he has every chance of winning it this time.

Harry Kane
Goals scored: 7
Odds: 3.60

Kane was the Golden Boot winner at the World Cup

Having won the Golden Boot in 2015/16 and 2016/17, and at the 2018 World Cup, it’s little surprise to see Tottenham’s Harry Kane amongst the favourites again this season. It’s amazing to think opposition fans used to dub Kane a “one season wonder,” when he’s scored over 20 goals four seasons in a row, with the last three having 25 or more. Spurs have very little in the way of back-up to Kane in the centre forward position, unlike Aguero, who has Gabriel Jesus vying for his starting place. This gives Kane a great chance of winning the Golden Boot again.

Mohamed Salah
Goals scored: 7
Odds: 5.25

Mohamed Salah was a revelation last year. The Egyptian scored 32 goals in 36 Premier League games, to claim the Golden Boot in spectacular fashion. The end of 2017/18 was tough for Salah, as he went off injured early in the Champions League Final, and failed to shine at the World Cup, but he seems to have put that behind him. Last year he had seven league goals in 11 games, so he is not far off that. A couple of goals before Christmas would see his odds shorten.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Goals scored: 8
Odds: 6.50

This might just be the best value in this list. African hotshot, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang already has eight goals to his name and seems to be on fire. Under Unai Emery, Arsenal have been an entertaining side, with goals at both ends in the majority of their games. The Gabonese striker has found his finishing touch this campaign and it would surprise no one if he scored over 20 Premier League goals. The only downside is that Auba often finds himself shunted onto the wing, or even the bench, in favour of Alexandre Lacazette.

Eden Hazard
Goals scored: 7
Odds: 11.00

The little Belgian genius started the campaign in wonderful form. Things have slowed up a bit, but he still has seven goals and four assists to his name. At odds of 11.00, it’s more than tempting to put a few bob on the Chelsea winger to end the season as the top goal scorer. However, he is not particularly known for scoring loads of goals, this could be a risk. Put it this way, Hazard has only scored over 15 league goals in one of his six Premier League campaigns.

Other tempting players could be Raheem Sterling, currently on seven goals, at odds of 18.00, or Senegalese winger, Sadio Mane, at big odds of 23.00.
