The world of Premier League management has become a constant revolving door. The upcoming season will be no different, with at least four new names confirmed at the helm of various clubs. Here is a lowdown of the managers who will get a taste of Premier League football for the first time ever next month.
Maurizio Sarri – Chelsea
Chelsea is the most notorious of all the big English sides when it comes to firing and hiring new managers. Maurizio Sarri is the 13th man to take charge of the Blues since Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich acquired the club in 2003. The contentious Italian spent three relatively successful years at Napoli, where he most notably pushed Juventus all the way in the title race last season.
Sarri has a lot to prove, though, as he has only managed at top flight level for the last four years and is yet to win a major trophy as coach.
Unai Emery – Arsenal
Unai Emery has found himself in an almost entirely different situation to Sarri after taking over as Arsenal boss this summer. Unlike in the scattergun approach adopted across London by Chelsea, the Gunners have stuck to one manager for the last 22 years. Emery enjoyed immense success as head coach of Sevilla between 2013 and 2016, as he led the club to three consecutive Europa League titles.
He spent the last two seasons at Paris St. Germain, where he won the Ligue 1 title once and the French Cup twice.
Slavisa Jokanović – Fulham
Slavisa Jokanović’s work with Fulham and other Championship clubs has been so impressive that he was at some point considered to be in the frame for the Chelsea job earlier this year. The Serbian manager led the Cottagers to promotion, although it was not his first success of that nature.
In 2015, he was in charge of Watford’s successful promotion charge, although he didn’t follow the club to the Premier League after he failed to agree a new deal.
Nuno Espírito Santo – Wolverhampton Wanderers
Alongside Jokanović, Nuno Espírito Santo of Wolverhampton Wanderers was another international-calibre manager who enjoyed success in the Championship last season. The former Valencia and Porto boss found himself in the second tier of English football thanks to his agent Jorge Mendes’ connection with Wolves. Mendes’ influence at the club enabled Nuno to strengthen his squad considerably and the team consequently cantered to the title, and Premier League football.
Marco Silva and Manuel Pellegrini are also managing new clubs in Everton and West Ham United this season, but they have prior experience in the English top flight. The same is true for Neil Warnock, who returns to the Premier League with newly-promoted Cardiff City. Click here for our latest odds on the upcoming Premier League season.
